Mayyas is a Lebanese dance group & America’s Got Talent winner for the year 2022. The group dancers are even the winner of Arab’s Got Talent back in 2019. Throughout their time on America’s Got Talent, the Mayyas quickly became a fan-favorite act amongst other hopefuls, which also included Metaphysic and Chapel Hart. As fans were drawn into their electric performances onstage, so were AGT judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Sofía Vergara, and Howie Mandel. Their combination of strategic dance moves and alluring visuals was so mesmerizing that Sofía gave them a golden buzzer.

The Mayyas’ founder, Nadim Cherfan, told Tribuneinfo exclusively “it means the world to us” to see judge Sofía Vergara wearing one of their necklaces.

Mayyas: The Proud Walk of a Lioness

The Mayyas troupe is from Beirut Lebanon. They are directed by a multi-talented dancer and choreographer Nadim Cherfan. They are known for delivering impressive dance acts with the accompaniment of songs and musical instruments. In 2019, the group competed in the sixth series of Arabs Got Talent, wherein they received judge Najwa Karam’s Golden Buzzer, before later going on to win the competition. Later in the same year the group participated in Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions, wherein they were eliminated in the preliminaries.

Dancer Maryjoe Tarabay shared:

It’s really hard. Being solo is more pressure when you’re on stage, but being a group is harder for us to do one training, to be all in the same training, especially for us with the visuals. If one person is not in the training, we can’t train. So this is one of the hardest things we faced. But eventually, we were strong enough to train from Monday to Sunday with no rest days for four months for AGT. And now here we are!

They were inspired to audition for AGT through the words of the late Nightbirde: “we can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.”

Lebanese, who have been in the grip of the ongoing crises for years, found a rare moment of pride and joy in their country.

“I am among Lebanese citizens who over the past three years went through severe financial, psychological, and social crises,” Marie Ziyade, a fan of Mayyas, told The Associated Press. “I have always had hope in the people of my country, but Mayyas brought me joy.”

Lebanon’s crippling economic crisis has pushed three-quarters of its population into poverty and resulted in a massive brain drain of young professionals leaving the country for better job opportunities abroad.

Nour Massalkhi is among a surging number of the country’s youth who left Lebanon for better jobs and lives. Since leaving in 2019 when the economy crumbled, she says she’s felt a sense of “anger and despair” watching her native country’s rapid decline from her new home in the United Arab Emirates.

But she says Mayyas’ journey to the top on “America’s Got Talent” is a “small glimmer of hope” that Lebanon needs.

“Their win was only one example of the hundred other artists, innovators, and entrepreneurs that continue to persevere abroad,” Massalkhi told the AP. “Everything from the music to the choreography and down to their outfits are curated with extreme precision and honors our Lebanese roots.”

The dance group’s victory was never going to stop Lebanon’s economy from spiraling or help break months of political deadlock and tensions that have followed decades of rampant corruption, nefarious financial mismanagement and sect-based power-sharing. But it may have brought a brief moment of hope for the troubled country.
